Practice Areas

At Law Office of Robert B. Dunlap, we provide the following legal services.

Probate and Successions

In Louisiana, succession is a legal process that documents a person’s passing and establishes heirs’ identity. It unlocks access to assets and rights for heirs, even if they’re named in a will or are close relatives. Succession protects heirs and creditors by accounting for assets and debts. However, professional legal guidance is often needed to navigate the process smoothly and avoid delays. Cost-effective procedures can also be used for estates valued under $125,000.

Mineral Law

Managing mineral rights without an attorney is akin to navigating a complex map in a foreign language. Oil and gas companies have experienced lawyers protecting their interests, while you may face intricate lease agreements, production royalties, and surface rights issues impacting your property for generations. Many mineral owners unknowingly sign away rights or accept lower payments due to legal complexities. An attorney specializing in mineral law can help you understand your rights, negotiate better terms, ensure accurate payments, and protect your interests. They can also structure your rights to maximize tax benefits and ensure smooth transfers to heirs, preventing future family disputes and preserving your legacy.

Wills & Estate Planning

Consider estate planning in Louisiana as creating a roadmap for your family’s future. Without one, you risk leaving them navigating our unique legal landscape blindfolded. Louisiana has distinctive laws that can override your wishes if not documented. For instance, you can’t simply exclude children from your will; they’re entitled to a portion as “forced heirs” in certain situations. Additionally, community property laws may affect your spouse’s inheritance. A proper estate plan helps you work within these rules to protect your family, minimize taxes, avoid costly court proceedings, and ensure your property (including unique assets) goes to your desired recipients. It’s like installing a security system for your family’s future; it may seem unnecessary now but provides invaluable protection and peace of mind when needed.
